PG Hospital is one of the oldest and best public hospitals in Bangladesh. The name PG Hospital is a former name and nowadays the name of the hospital has changed to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University or commonly known as BSMMU. It is also one of the best graduate medical universities of Bangladesh.
The medical university count in Bangladesh is very low but PG Hospital or BSMMU is an international standard medical university which is situated at the heart of the nation. The campus of this university and the hospital compound is situated at Shahbag, Dhaka. In this campus the medical students can only pursue the Post Graduate Medical degrees. No undergraduate degree is available in this university.
The former name of this medical institute was “Institute of Postgraduate Medicine and Research” or IPGMR. IPGMR was established back in 1965. Back then the campus of the institute was housed in the Hotel Shahbag. In the year 1998 the name of the medical institute was changed to BSMMU.
Many governmental and non-governmental medical institutes of Bangladesh are now affiliated with the BSMMU. BSMMU is one of the largest hospitals of Bangladesh as more than 1900 beds are available here. There are 6 faculties and 42 departments in this medical university.
